AECO Mobile Device Usage

Have you ever wondered what mobile device usage is like in the AECO? For an upcoming presentation I’m doing, this exact question came up. I found some data online and in some older AECO and ConTech reports I had, but nothing for 2024.

When I couldn’t find any current data, I did what all good AECO folks do and went to LinkedIn and X for some help!

For the next 7 days after that post, 52 great people heeded the call and filled out my Google form so I could have some current data. The Google form had 8 questions, and the raw response data is below. But before we get to the data, I thought I would share my thoughts on it.

Some of the data was what I had expected, I mean it’s 2024 so it’s not surprising that 98.1% of AECO folks are using some form of mobile device for their workflow. it also wasn’t a surprise to me that most people who are using company devices keep them with them all the time. With that being said it also made sense that there were more “return” responses for tablets than phones.

Some of the data on the other hand was a little surprising. I figured the company vs personal question would be closer to even or more on the company side, but it was the opposite, 70% – 30% for personal. What was even more shocking was that for those using personal phones or tablets the level of compensation, Full, Partial, or None, ended up being None 66% for phones and 80% for tablets! Does this mean employers just expect employees to use their own tech? Or does it mean that the people who replied are just tech geeks and love to use the technology so much that they don’t mind using their own gear? I think it’s likely a little of both, but I would guess more being expected to just use your own tech…aka you have it so just use it.

Okay, enough of my babbling check out the raw data for yourself 👇

Question 1 Are they A, E, C or O?
Question 2 What device do they use?
Question 3 Who’s phone is it?
Question 4 Who pays for the phone?
Question 5 Who keeps the phone?
Question 6 Who’s tablet is it?
Question 7 Who pays for the tablet?
Question 8 Who keeps the tablet?

The raw data is great, but it did need a little fine-tuning to get the real numbers. Some of the questions had “Not applicable” or “Other” so individual replies could be added. An example would be if they didn’t have input for that question they could pick “Not applicable”. After removing data that was not relevant to the questions I have some updated charts for the last 6 questions.

Question 3 Cleaned
  1. If you use a Smart Phone for work, is it a personal or company device? (50 responses)
    a. Personal = 35 (70%)
    b. Company = 15 (30%)

  1. If you use your personal Smart Phone for work, are you compensated by your company? (44 responses)
    a. Yes = 9 (20.4%)
    b. Partial = 6 (13.6%)
    c. No = 29 (66%)
Question 5 Cleaned

    a. Keep 24/7 = 18 (94.75%)
    b. Return when finished use or site visit = 1 (5.25%)
Question 6 Cleaned
  1. If you use a Tablet for work, is it a personal or company device? (35 responses)
    a. Personal = 24 (68.6%)
    b. Company = 11 (31.4%)
Question 7 Cleaned
  1. If you use your personal Tablet for work, are you compensated by your company? (30 responses)
    a. Yes = 4 (13.3%)
    b. Partially = 2 (6.7%)
    c. No = 24 (80%)
Question 8 Cleaned
  1. If you use a company Tablet for work, do you keep it 24/7 or return it at the end of the day/shift/use? (12 responses)
    a. Keep 24/7 = 10 (83.4%)
    b. Return end of day/shift = 1 (8.3%)
    c. Return when finished use or site visit = 1 (8.3%)

So there you have it, my thoughts on the data, the raw data, and the cleaned data. Now it’s your turn to interpret the numbers and let me know and fellow AECO peeps know them in the comments (or in LinkedIn or on X, you know the drill).

Until next time peeps,
